More than 300 Bangladeshi illegal migrants have been arrested by Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents in Texas this fiscal year. Syed Ahmed Jamal, a Bangladeshi chemistry professor detained in US, may face deportation

A Bangladeshi chemistry professor, living in the United States, was detained for deportation by two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials from his house in Lawrence, Kansas on January 24. Syed Ahmed Jamal, who had barely stepped out of home to drop his daughter at school, was taken away in handcuffs before he could say goodbye to his other two children and wife. He was taken to a detention centre where he will be held pending his deportation to Bangladesh. The incident has shocked the local community in Kansas City, where Ahmed has lived for over 30 years. His friends and locals have launched a signature campaign on the popular petition website Change.org to halt his deportation. More than 18,000 people have signed the petition so far.

A Bangladeshi national was sentenced to six years and eight months’ jail, as well as fined RM30,000 and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Pekan Nanas here for 16 charges under the Immigration Act. Judge Zahilah Md Yusof handed down the sentence on Md Mohiuddin Mamun, 40, who pleaded guilty to all the charges. Mohiuddin was charged with 14 counts of unlawful possession of passports which did not belong to him, while the other two charges were for violating his social visit pass and for attempting to forge either a visa, permit or pass under the Immigration Act. Mohiuddin was charged under Section 12 (1) (f) of the Passport Act 1966, which provides a maximum fine of RM10,000, or imprisonment for up to five years’ jail, or both, upon conviction. He was sentenced to between 10 months and 18 months on each charge. Ali Zafar, a 73-year-old Pakistani American man was suspected of fatally shooting three family members and critically wounding another over a longstanding financial dispute, authorities in the Southern California city of Fontana said Jan. 4. Ali Zafar, an uncle of the family, was arrested on suspicion of homicide shortly after the shootings inside an apartment in Fontana, Police Sgt. Kevin Goltara said. When officers entered the apartment they found two women and one man dead from gunshot wounds. Another victim only described as male was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
